Kokino was discovered in 2001 on a rocky volcanic peak north-east of Kumanovo. Archaeologists interpret it as a sacred site and observatory of the Bronze Age, with stone markers that line up with the rising sun and moon at key moments of the year, such as the solstices. The climb is short and the views are wide. Our advice: wear good shoes; the summer solstice sunrise is the most popular time to visit.
