The back story

About Cinema in Skopje: the back story

Skopje has a film culture to match its theatres and concert halls: a national cinematheque that has kept the country’s film heritage since the 1970s, art-house screens at the Youth Cultural Center, and a modern multiplex for the latest releases.

The Cinematheque

The Cinematheque of North Macedonia, the national film archive, was founded in 1974 and has been at work since 1976. Alongside its archive it hosts screenings and film weeks, often with embassies and cultural institutes.

Art house at the Youth Cultural Center

The Youth Cultural Center (MKC) runs two cinemas, Kino Frosina and Kino Milenium. Frosina, with 263 seats, is a member of the Europa Cinemas network and shows European and art-house films (FNE).

A national cinematheque has kept the country’s film heritage since the 1970s.

Our tips

For the latest international releases, Cineplexx at Skopje City Mall in Karpoš is the city’s multiplex. In summer, the Cinematheque and the Youth Cultural Center have held open-air screenings in past years; check their websites from June.
