The church of St Panteleimon at Gorno Nerezi, on the slopes of Vodno, was founded in 1164 by a member of the Byzantine imperial family. Its frescoes, above all the deeply human Lamentation of Christ, are celebrated as masterpieces of Byzantine painting. A small fee is charged; take a taxi.
