On 20 September 2023 a panel of independent experts recommended Skopje as the European Capital of Culture 2028 for a candidate country, alongside České Budějovice in the Czech Republic and Bourges in France. The city’s programme is building towards the year, with new cultural projects, restored venues and events across the city.
